TCM Traditional Chinese Medicine

It is not uncommon to hear that Chinese medicine is a form of “slow treatment” as compared to western medicine that often delivers instant relief. While conventional medicine target to treat symptoms, TCM is concerned with correcting the underlying imbalance and restoring inner balance so that the body can function autonomously.

“Syndrome differentiation” is what guides TCM practitioners in determining treatment modalities and prescription of herbs or selection of acupuncture points. At Thomson Chinese Medicine, we integrate both syndrome differentiation and conventional medical diagnosis so patients are assured of receiving the best of both eastern and western medicine.

Digestive ailments like irritable bowel syndrome, reflux, bloating and constipation are increasingly prevalent due to stress, sedentary lifestyle and poor diet choices. These ailments are often chronic and recurring.

Through syndrome differentiation, a TCM practitioner is able to identify the underlying pattern of deficiency or excess and correct this with the use of Chinese herbal medicine. Patients can often see remarkable results within a short span of time.

From TCM perspective, all respiratory disorders can be traced back, but not limited to, to the function of the Organ Lung 肺脏. When the flow of energy in the lungs are interrupted, symptoms like coughing, shortness of breath, weakness and even excess sweating and phlegm will result.

A TCM physician does not try to stop or suppress a cough, but rather tries to find its underlying imbalance and how to restore balance to the relevant Organ(s). For those who frequently suffer from bouts of prolonged cough or with history of asthma, it is recommended to follow through with a course of Chinese medicine to strengthen the Organ Lung.

Poor sleeping patterns can happen to people of all age groups and patients often also suffer from irritability, exhaustion, muscle stiffness, impaired cognitive function and other health problems. With a thorough examination, the practitioner can determine the root cause of the insomnia and treat accordingly with acupuncture and/or Chinese medicine.

Skin problems arise from a number of causes, the most common of which are infections, overexposure to sunlight, parasites, toxic substances, hormonal imbalance, cell dysfunction, and stress.

In Chinese medicine, external pathological factors such as Wind, Dampness, Dryness, or Heat can invade the body and cause skin disorders. Internal imbalances are differentiated into patterns such as Blood Stasis, Disharmony of Liver and Kidney, or Blood Deficiency, and are often reflected on the skin. When skin problems are generated by internal imbalance, the underlying problem must be addressed, in order to clear up the surface manifestation.
Common skin problems that may be treated by TCM include eczema, acne, dermatitis, pruritus cutis and psoriasis.

Stroke management

Stroke can be caused by either haemorrhage or thrombosis. Haemorrhage occurs when an artery bursts and bleeds into brain tissue, whereby thrombosis occurs when a clot is formed and blocks the blood supply to brain tissue. The occurrence of either will cause part of the brain to be deprived of oxygen.
If thrombosis is the main cause of the stroke, acupuncture treatment should take place as soon as possible. On the hand, if haemorrhage is the main cause, acupuncture treatment should only be carried out when bleeding ceases. After examination, our physician will advise which of the below 3 programmes will be suitable for patient.

  1. Severe condition
    • 3 times a week for 2 weeks
    • 2 times a week for next 4 weeks
    • 1 time a week for next 6 weeks
  2. Moderate condition
    • 2 times a week for 6 weeks
    • 1 time a week for next 6 weeks
  3. Rehabilitation and prevention
    • 1 time a week for 12 weeks
